What do you guys think of “Cold Mountain” in terms of civil war literature?
Like I am very familiar with the film, which I like a lot, so I go to read the book and I kinda am disappointed. Maybe that’s just not the author’s focus but there are just so few was written about the two’s romance before the war, so if you read only the book then all you get is Inman and Ada are already in love, but how? When and why did they fall in love with one another? Enough so she’s waiting all along and he would desert just for her?
Not to mention, the book start with her father already dead, again, how? How did she deal with the grief? What was their life overall like before the war?(in the book you got told that what she know before are all not practical, which is true enough but it was basically like a few sentences and that’s it)How did she even come to Cold Mountain from Charleston and so on? And not to mention, there’s little writing of the home guard, nor the war itself. So in the end he got shot by that home guard fellow seems out of nowhere as to why this fellow refuse to just let him leave. There’s no build up it seems.
Still amazing but many things was not even much explained.
