Need advice on keeping board game nights going while dealing with my mom forgetting rules mid-game
I am in the Midwest and have been managing more of my parents stuff lately. My mom has early dementia and it shows up in small ways that are getting harder to ignore.
Board games used to be our easiest low-cost family activity. It keeps my dad engaged and it is one of the few things that reliably gets my mom to laugh. The issue is that she now forgets rules in the middle of a game, or she will take extra turns, or get upset that someone is "changing the rules" when we are not. A couple times she has accused my dad of cheating and then refused to play.
I am not trying to turn game night into a therapy session, but I also do not want to stop inviting them because it is one of the only social things they do. I am looking for practical suggestions from people who have dealt with this.
What kinds of games work well when someone may lose the thread partway through? Any tips for teaching without making it feel like I am correcting her? Are cooperative games better, or do they create more pressure? Also, any simple table habits that reduce frustration (like open hands, turn reminders, or removing scoring) would be appreciated.
We own mostly medium weight games, but I am fine with switching to lighter stuff if it keeps the night positive. I just want something that feels respectful and fun for everyone. #games source
