I've been taking multiple classes regarding literature in order to complete my degree. So far, I've managed to dodge conversation in all of my classes by either not talking or writing a half-understood explanation. I've passed tests regarding poetry simply because I regurgitate the interpretations I've been given.
However, now that I'm in my fourth year of college and quickly approaching my master's, I can't take this approach to poetry anymore. I have to speak about what I think without previous interpretations, and I have to make them unique to my own understanding...
But the issue is that I never understand poetry! Or metaphors for that matter. Right now, for example, we're reading The Waste Land by TS Eliot, and I have no idea what the hell is happening. I never understand poetry. Why am I reading about a mountain in one line, random rambles in another, and then religion all in one section??? I cannot wrap my head around the meanings because the content seems so unrelated. I have no issues finding deeper meanings within novels, short stories, essays, etc, but as soon as you give me poetry, I'm staring at it blankly.
How do I fix this??? How can I gather meaning? How can I, at the bare minimum, understand something that seems so jumbled up? #entertainment source
