The U-22 team made history winning gold in Cambodia's 2023 SEA Games football branch. This certainty was obtained after the national team defeated Thailand with a score of 5-2 in the final which took place at the Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium, Tuesday (16/5).
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir expressed his gratitude because Indonesia could pay the historical debt of winning SEA Games gold which was last won 32 years ago. "Alhamdulillah, our 32-year wait to see the Indonesian football team win is realized today. Thank you to all the players, coaches and officials. We dedicate this gold to all Indonesian people," said Erick after the final match, Tuesday (16/5).
Erick expressed his appreciation for all the sweat, hard work, and sacrifices made by the U-22 squad. Starting from players, coaches, to staff and officials.
According to Erick, this is proof that Indonesia is a tough nation and is able to work together for one goal. "Today Indonesian children who are generally under 22 years old prove that we are a tough nation, hardworking, and able to work together to be the best," said Erick.
After the match, Erick immediately reported to President Jokowi. Erick thanked President Jokowi for fully supporting the U-22 team from the beginning. "Thank you, Mr. President. This is a mission that from the beginning, the President was very serious about encouraging Indonesian football to excel. Alhamdulillah, finally the mission and wait for the champion came true today," said Erick.
Erick admitted that he was touched to see how the players got up and down and tireless throughout the match. According to him, Indonesia has been made proud by the struggle, sacrifice, and mental determination of players until the final whistle.
"This is the pride of all Indonesian people. Today we are one, from the audience in the stadium to all the people of remote Indonesia who watched on the glass screen fused with the players on the field. One prayer, one hope, and one happiness," Erick said.
Erick said this result was the starting point of the Indonesian football team's journey to. Reach higher. "This SEA Games gold will be the starting point. The national team will continue to improve themselves, hone their skills. Because our target is not to stop in Cambodia. But Cambodia is the beginning of our football journey to reach higher hopes at a higher level," Erick said.
