Should I take a semester break from college and backpack through Europe with 2 of my friends?
I am currently about to enter my sophomore year of college at University of Minnesota and I will be turning 20 in October. I have been thinking about taking a break during the spring to go and travel Europe with 2 of my closest friends from highschool. I don't really know what I want to do with my career yet and I am currently undecided in what I want to major in. I am most likely leaning towards studying Management Information Systems- and I have already taken some classes in this field, but I am not sure if I want to do this as a career. My friends said they were going to travel Europe and I could take a leave of absence during the spring and go with them. I have been working and saving a lot of my money to help fund this trip and I am reaching to get 10,000. I think going on this trip to Europe would be awesome to look back on for the rest of my life since these are my two of my best friends I don't see this opportunity happening again with them.
After the trip is over though I would still like to graduate college. One main reason I want to spend this time traveling is because I want to explore different opportunities, and I don't want to live with the regret of not going, and not being happy with my time in college and my career. My freshman year was very depressing for me, and I am getting closer to where I need to pick a major. I came into college with 21 extra credits already done so I am already a semester ahead, and to be honest if I have to graduate a semester late because I went on this trip that doesn't bother me. I just want to be proud of my time in college and the work I put in. I feel like I am not going to achieve this the current path I am going down as I felt very unmotivated with learning the classes I was taking and didn't work that hard my first year. I felt like this trip could be good for me to find my purpose and give me motivation to work hard towards something- that being continuing college after Europe or doing something else.
Some more information is that I currently have a lease for an apartment next year, and if I am not able to find someone to take over my lease for when I leave to go to Europe I will not be going at all since I won't be able to afford that. I also could possibly try taking online classes while on the trip to stay on track so if you think that it would be a good idea bringing my laptop and doing this please let me know. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!
