Does Count Paris’s role seem redundant?
I recently been going back and reading Romeo and Juliet and I couldn’t help but question the role Count Paris plays in the plot. Sure he’s the reason why Juliet fakes her death but his role doesn’t seem to need an actor to play the part. Rather he might as well have been a random nobleman in Lord Capulet’s personal circle. Anyone could have been the groom in that arranged marriage.
Now for the duel between Romeo and Paris. It doesn’t seem necessary. Heck the 1968 and 1996 RJ adaptations doesn’t bother to include it. Kinda furthers Paris’s redundancy to the plot doesn’t it? Rather it seemed like some random action-packed tangent to the actual plot. Although I can understand arguments on how the fight and the preamble before the fight can show Romeo’s state of mind from Juliet’s perceived death the scene where he buys poison serves that purpose as well.
