The wild horse of South African wines - Pinotage. Pinotage is a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Hermitage locally) first created in 1925 by Professor Perold, but the first wines were only made in a small batch in 1941 by Mr De Waal (a lecturer). Pinotage, primarily known for its dark, ripe fruit flavors like blackberry, cherry, and fig, has a bold, sweet jammy flavor with a smoky, earthy finish. Pinotage is a high-sugar, high-ABV, full-bodied grape with medium-high tannins. Currently the best Pinotage wines are made on Beyerskloof (https://beyerskloof.co.za) and Kanonkop (https://www.kanonkop.co.za). Both in the Stellenbosch (https://www.visitstellenbosch.org) area. Stellenbosch is a student town about 50km from Cape Town.
