Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photo of the recreated flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, on February 23, 1945. The actual event had taken place earlier but was interrupted by a Japanese attack. This image later became the model for the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
