I drove a 991.2 GT3 for 15 minutes on a twisty backroad I was having a pretty bad week. Depression, anxiety, and existential dread all started flowing as they do. Anyways, headed over to a car show over the weekend to try and have fun. Saw a friend and we chatted for a bit but, as the car show was ending a Porsche Rep pulled up in a 991.2 GT3 with a manual. The rep actually knew my friend and introduced me. Small World. I complimented the car, asked a bunch of questions, and after a good chat I just mentioned off hand that it’s a bucket list item to drive a Porsche. Not even thinking there was a possibility that I’d even be able to sit in it, let alone drive it. The rep offers to let me drive it, and that he knows the perfect road. Truly can’t believe how fast my week turned around. I could hardly believe what was happening. Before I “review” this car, I need to let you know I don’t know anything. I’m not a race car driver, I’m not a journalist, I’m barely even an engineer. I also spent 15 minutes with this car hooning it around on the street. Hardly enough for a conclusive review. I’m not a Porsche diehard either. Just a guy who is obsessed with cars and enjoys starting dialogues with anonymous car enthusiasts on the internet. Anyways, with the cushioning out of the way.. It’s a great car, probably the best car I’ve ever driven if I’m honest. That 9k rpm redline is fantastic, inside the cabin is pretty much all induction and engine noise. Steering is great, as you would imagine: weights up nicely, decent feedback, and very responsive. The suspension did not get upset even over big bumps, felt very planted. The car has Cup 2s so endless grip. The transmission is so smooth, I wouldn't say it's mechanical per se but, the gates are easy to feel and is enjoyable to shift. I’ve never driven a mid engine or rear engine car before. It felt like the weight behind me was like a firm hand in my back guiding me through corners. It’s so easy to drive fast, it’s like it drives itself. But… I was expecting a bit more. The rep said it’ll be listed for around TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS! If you can afford one you’ll love it but, I think there are significantly cheaper cars that offer a lot of driving thrill. It’s a car I’ve certainly built up that it’d be this other worldly driving experience. Like I said I didn’t spend a ton of time with the car but, walking away it didn’t feel like a $200k driving experience to me. Maybe my lack of driving expertise prevents me from detecting great car from a fantastic one. I really hate to say it but, I didn’t feel a night and day difference in the steering in terms of road feel or how weighted up under load from like a 6th gen SS 1LE or even my 2013 GTR. Same with the transmission I think the tremec boxes are pretty darn close in the SS 1LE or GT350. Magnetic ride control also is very smooth and soaks up imperfections without upsetting the car. The engine in the GT3 is really what stood out about the driving experience. Hard to replicate that induction/engine noise but, you can certainly get a better sounding exhaust note from other cars. It's the best one car solution in terms of a driver's car but, if I had $200k I'd be looking to have a variety of cars. Looking at Car and Driver the MSRP was $145k in 2018, that price makes sense to me. Factor in some hypothetical depreciation after 5 years and I'd be looking to sell everything to get one. At $200k it doesn't make sense to me but, to the Porsche fan it probably does. I also for fun took the Porsche rep down the same road in my GTR. He had never even been in a GTR and was really curious. So it only seemed fair given the situation. He was really surprised how much he enjoyed it. There was a distinct smell of tire when we got out. He had always heard the "drives like a video game" opinion. I’m sure I didn’t convert him from Porsche but, I thought that was kind of cool. Hopefully turned him into a fan at least. Another thing that was kind of funny to me is how tiny everything is on the interior compared to other cars I’ve driven. The buttons, the rear view mirror, the shifter, so many aspects of the interior have been scaled down.
