The UN General Assembly has backed a non-binding resolution supporting a shift away from the Mercator world map toward the Equal Earth projection. The vote was 164 in favour, one against and six abstentions. 🗺️
The change focuses on area distortion. Mercator was designed for navigation, but it enlarges high-latitude regions; Africa is about 14 times Greenland’s area despite often looking comparable in size on Mercator maps.
Equal Earth is an equal-area projection developed in 2018 by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny. It keeps relative areas proportional while using a rounded world-map layout inspired by the Robinson projection. 🌍
The resolution does not compel governments, schools or technology platforms to replace Mercator. Togo led the initiative on behalf of the African Union, and implementation would depend on decisions by those institutions.
