Is crime and punishment meant to be comical??
Just want to say I DO NOT THINK THE WHOLE BOOK NOR MURDERS WERE FUNNY AT ALL
The parts I find funny are when Raskolnikov continuously loses his mind about what’s he’s done and how he wants to rub it in everyone’s face. I thinks it’s funny because he think he’s done something so amazing and he’s outwitted everyone when really he’s destroying his own mind because he did something horrible which I don’t think any regular human (which he is) could stand. This paradox itself makes me chuckle very often when reading the book especially his encounters with this detective. When the detective first called him a madman I couldn’t help but to laugh because that’s truly what he is and he doesn’t realize it yet. It reminds me of the secret history by Donna Tart when the students began to lose their minds after what they done. Such confidence never seems to overshadow or defeat the blatant hysteria these characters develop.
