Is a portable ice maker worth it if I currently keep buying bags of ice?
I’m living in a student apartment and will probably be here for about 3 years. We have a shared kitchen, but the freezer space is limited, so there really isn’t enough room for me to keep ice trays or store much ice. Because of that, I’ve been buying bags of ice when I need it. It works, but it’s not very convenient, and the cost adds up more than I expected. I’m starting to wonder if buying a small portable ice maker would be the more frugal option in the long run.
I know countertop ice makers don’t actually keep the ice frozen forever, so I’d still need to use the ice right away or move it somewhere. But for drinks, studying at home, guests, or small gatherings, it seems easier than constantly buying bags of ice.
I’m looking at portable ice makers under $300. I’ve seen some around $100-$150, and then more expensive ones closer to $250-$300. I’m wondering if the cheaper ones are actually unreliable, or if they’re fine for basic use. Right now I’m mainly comparing GE and Costway. If I use it for 3 years in this apartment, or maybe 5-6 years if I take it with me later, would a portable ice maker actually save money compared with buying bags of ice? Or is this one of those purchases that seems frugal but ends up being more trouble than it’s worth?
Has anyone done the math or used one long enough to know? #finance
