So I’m reading W&P again after an initial DNF because I got too busy and took too long of a break to remember characters like 6 months ago. Already loving it again, and it’s easier to navigate the beginning knowing some of the characters and how they’re connected/why they’re important.
Here’s my problem: I know that this is a book with something like 500 characters who are all connected in some way, have different names, move in and out of the narrative, etc. it’s complicated. There’s a small guide at the front of my version (Barnes & Noble classics) to the coremost characters, but there are like 20 side characters with names starting with the letter D that aren’t accounted for.
The obvious answer is “take notes” or “annotate”, which I really try not to do unless something jumps out that’s like “oh shit I need to save this” or “oh I need to make this connection”. It’s fully intuitive. Otherwise I just read and get immersed and leave the pencil down. Especially since it adds so much time to my reading overall.
I’m stuck between two truths: if I don’t take notes of some kind, I think I’ll get lost. And it I do take notes and make myself a roadmap, I’m gonna be reading this book and only this book for the next year.
What can I do to keep my pace of 1-2 months for this book while still keeping a firm grasp on this complexity of this story? #entertainment source
