Ryo Fukui - Scenery - 1976
Ryo Fukui (福居良, Fukui Ryō , June 1, 1948 – March 15, 2016) was a Japanese jazz pianist based in Sapporo . He played regularly at the "Slowboat" jazz club, in Sapporo, which he and his wife Yasuko owned. Fukui taught and performed internationally until his death in 2016. His work has seen a spike in popularity after his death, with several reissues of his albums.
Fukui released his first album, Scenery , in 1976. It was virtually ignored in the United States, given that it was released at a time of reduced American interest in jazz. However, it was well appreciated by Japanese fans and critics alike. “Scenery” is the third track on Side B of the album.
In the decades since Scenery 's release, the album has earned greater critical praise. Fukui's dexterity and self-taught style has earned him comparison to such piano greats as McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans .
