A waste mound at Conakry’s Dar Es Salam landfill collapsed after heavy rain early Sunday, killing 30 people, Guinea’s government said. Six people were seriously injured, and homes and informal dwellings near the site were buried. 🚨

The dump is described as Conakry’s largest open-air landfill. Authorities said the rain began around 2 a.m.; rescuers used excavators and other equipment while searching for survivors and recovering bodies.

The disaster came days after the government announced the site would close because it was unsafe and that waste would be moved outside the capital. Residents near the landfill had received eviction notices, though officials said some people remained in the area.

Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site as the operation continued. The government said it would provide medical care and assistance to those affected; the final number of people buried and the timetable for relocating waste were not yet known. 🏗️
