Charles Wayne Zimmerman from the US sailed to Russia on a boat for a girl he met online

a U.S. citizen followed his heart and sailed alone from the Carolinas to Sochi. His small yacht traveled the route Carolina (USA) → Ponta Delgada (Portugal) → Mallorca (Spain) → Sicily (Italy) → Greece → Turkey.
He departed on July 1, 2024, and finished on June 19, 2025. He had a gun onboard for self-defense, which he hid from border control. After customs checks in Russia, the weapon was found.
According to the press service of the Kuban courts:
“The defendant fully admitted his guilt. Zimmerman told the court he met a woman from Kazan online and decided to come to Russia on his yacht. He didn’t study Russian law and assumed that the firearm he kept for self-defense should simply remain onboard.”
Charles was sentenced to 5 years in a general-regime penal colony. The appeal did not change the verdict.
