One of the reasons RTO is bullshit is because of the insane housing market
This is just a short off-my-chest. I live in western Europe - always worked remote.
And one of the biggest reasons I would never do a RTO is because of the insane housing market. I'm not one of the fortunate buyers of a house before the pandemic, so I'm bound to the insane ruthlessness that we call the rental market. That's already where you can easily see RTO makes no sense. On average, wages barely went up, yet my taxes did, cost of living did, and especially rental prices did. What makes matters even worse is that most landlords don't seem to give two fucks about making a place look nice. At best, you get an ikea-furniture box where you can go and come home to each day after work to feel even more exploited in your home. I'm slowly making the transition to becoming an employer myself, and I've always promised that if things go well, I want to do things radically different than all the assholes I worked for. One of those things is not forcing people to come to an office and get extorted by their landlord as a result.
I have friends who have good jobs, and some had to switch or were laid off, and had no choice but to take a hybrid or in-office position, but net/net they are actually going backwards - because the closer you get to a city, the more exploitative the rentals start to get. I understand that cities have generally always been a lot more expensive to live, but these days it's absolute insanity. Browsing for rentals makes me sick these days and what pisses me off even more is that I know people like this who rent out places IRL. Without exception these are the most spoiled/selfish/low people I have ever met. They call themselves entrepreneurs but they don't have even an ounce of creativity in them - that's why the best they could do is trade bricks for cash.
This is also why I've always refused to relocate for a job. The risk is too damn high.
Back in the day that made sense because you'd get a long term contract and loyalty was still a thing. These days I've seen horror stories unfold of people RTO or moving for a better job, only to get fired shortly after. Great, now you uprooted your entire life and increased your living expenses and you're basically stuck there. Let's also not pretend that most companies are anything remarkable. The culture is shit, leadership is trash, and the product and or service most likely sucks as well. It's not like you are working at the new Apple, you are basically just trying to climb a ladder that leads straight into the abyss. Only very few people get to work at places that will set them up for life - those people have careers. Everyone else has a job. Period.
All of this is also one of the reasons I don't have kids and I stay single for now. I want to be able to walk out at any moment in time, and not be a slave to anyone like that. I hate to say it, but with dependents you often have no choice but to be a slave in the machine. If the housing market was more healthy, I think a lot of the problems we experience today as a society would go away. But it won't anytime soon, because it's the result of decades of wrongful financial policies. The housing market is completely fucked, and you can just taste the greed of corporations and landlords in the air. The prices are so insane, for such shit quality these days, it makes you wonder how the flying fuck anyone is even able to pay for it. source
