Not quite clicking with Joan Didion's work

I am a Bret Easton Ellis superfan, and I know that Joan Didion is one of his biggest influences, so I've been trying to get into her work.

I read Play It As It Lays twice. The first time I was kind of "eh" and the second time I loved it.

I can't really get into Slouching Towards Bethlehem, though. I loved the title essay but the other essays don't stand out to me. The writing is absolutely beautiful, and I can tell she is a master of her craft, but the essays aren't sparking anything in me.

Maybe I just don't like her nonfiction as much? Maybe I need to read it again? Maybe I'm missing something? Any other Bret Easton Ellis fans have the same experience?
