This Neolithic drum is made of brownish-red fired clay. It has incised decorations in the upper part that show fir branch motifs on a horizontal band of the same pattern.
These so-called clay drums of the Neolithic Walternienburg-Bernburg culture were beaten with bare hands, and were used for musical entertainment and ceremonies.
The Walternienburg-Bernburger Culture was to a mid-Neolithic culture which resided on the area of modern Saxony-Anhalt, the Thuringian Basin and Franconia from 3200 to 2800 BC.
