My son just dropped the news on me and his brother that he’s gay. I’m worried about his dad finding out
I know 9 is young, but my son said he’s felt this way and has been hiding it since 5. Honestly, we weren’t really surprised when he told us last night as we sort of suspected it for a while. His brother and I told him we’re super proud of him for being brave enough to tell us and that we’re here to support and advocate for him. We ended the conversation with a huge hug and told him we love him no matter what.
Now, here’s the thing. I’m worried about his dad who’s my ex husband finding out. I told my son last night it’s his choice on whether or not his dad knows and he doesn’t have to say anything to him or anyone else right now just because he told his brother and I. Of course though, I know eventually my ex will find out and I’m worried about him being unaccepting or saying something to make our son feel ashamed about it or maybe treating him differently. I know I can’t control another persons feelings but it just breaks my heart at the thought of my son having to go through feeling weird or any kind of way just because of who he is. I feel bad for anyone having to go through their childhood or life feeling they have to hide a major part of themselves because people can be so cruel and unaccepting. So it hurts me thinking about it for my son and his dad. I know I’m overthinking too far ahead but still. What’s the best way to handle this?
For context on his dad: His dad has always been a bit homophobic. We were together for nearly 10 years and have been divorced for 7. My son has wanted to paint his nails in the past and dad would make comments about it “being gay” or just make comments about things being gay or “that’s for girls”. Typical homophobia stuff but not in an aggressive or cruel manner. So, finding out this information whenever my son decides to tell him, I worry if he’ll silently “disown” him. Not completely but be more cold and closed off towards him. No person deserves that just because of their sexuality. #lifestyle source
