Anthropic says its Claude AI agents helped identify a previously uncharacterized enzyme system associated with repeated DNA sequences. The company calls the system array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ART. 🧬

Anthropic said the agents searched genomic data, proposed candidates and produced reports for human review. Company scientists then tested the leading candidate in the laboratory.

The reported system includes a reverse transcriptase, a nearby partner gene and a long array of DNA repeats. Anthropic says the repeat pattern resembles CRISPR arrays and that the array is expressed as distinct short RNAs.

The finding is an early demonstration of an AI-assisted research workflow rather than a proven medical or gene-editing application. ART's primary function remains unknown, Anthropic said, and further experiments are under way. 🔬

Anthropic said it has released a preprint and is sharing the work while it continues to investigate the system. Independent replication and peer-reviewed assessment have not yet been reported in the supplied sources.
