The value of Marquis de Sade? Specifically Justine/Juliette and Philosophy in the Bedroom.
Hi! Not sure if this kind of post is allowed here, but I wanted to hear some thoughts and perspectives on the Marquis de Sade and the value of his work in the modern day - how do you think his work has/hasn't affected literature and do you find it valuable at all? Personally, I started out fascinated but found there to be little value until I started reading secondary essays, biographies of the man and his other works. I have not actually finished Juliette, but I have read the other two - Juliette is incredibly long and I find the "philosophy" to be repetitive and the horrible sexual bits get... boring, somehow. I don't want to discuss the 120 days which is in my opinion, a book with very little value. It's over discussed, lacks substance and I'm tired of people bringing it up as an example of Sade being a bad writer.
Anyhow, I personally find his legacy quite fascinating - he directly influenced philosophers as well as authors, from bataille, deleuze and beauvoir to Angela Carter, and perhaps even less "literary" authors such as Anne Rice. Obviously the latter only really takes the "shocking" sexual aspects from the book, but Carter is a brilliant author who utilizes Sadean ideas quite well. What are your opinions? I understand he's a controversial figure in literature, with most people not even accepting that his work be labeled as such.
