Appreciation post on the German directness

Hi,

Does anyone else not brought up in Germany is fond of the German directness?

People mean what they say and they say what they mean. I do not have to second guess or be worried that I didn't pick up some subtle cues. Yes is Yes, No is No! *How wonderful!* When the guest says they don't want more food, they really don't. *How nice!* I hated having to butter up guests at home to take more food. According to the norm, it is rude to take the guests' words on face value. You should keep serving them more AND convince them to eat more. Even as a child, it would not make sense to me.

I love my home country (India) and the culture there but I was a total misfit when it came to dealing with social situations. Indirect talks, subtlety, white lies (sometimes to just be polite) and even taunts are essential part of communication. Sometimes it is also important to indulge in all these to be in good books of others (not that it makes sense anyway). It would get on my nerves to 'understand' people beyond the words they spoke.

Not gonna lie, initially I did find it difficult to adjust in Germany and I still have my share of problems, but I love love not having to understand subtlety!
