TECHFOCUS | Electricity From Pomelo Peels

A method for turning pomelo-peel biomass into electricity was recently developed by researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

The method leverages the use of triboelectric nanogenerators or PP-TENGs, which largely generate electricity through mechanical forces that hinge on the porous nature of the peels. The electricity generated from it could be utilized to power tiny electronics like biomechanical motion sensors—apart from having potential applications in healthcare and rehabilitation.
