NASA shared a captivating photo of the sun glowing purple, marked by a bright red and white solar flare on Friday.
“Solar flares happen when the Sun’s magnetic fields build up tension and explosively readjust, like the sudden release of a twisted rubber band, in a process called magnetic reconnection. This process creates solar flares, as well as other kinds of solar eruptions,” the space agency explained in its post.
NASA added that the solar flare shown in the photo is classified as an X4.2 flare, one of the most intense flares.
