Gospel Verse and Reflection
REFLECTION
A Pharisee tests Jesus by asking which commandment is the greatest. Jesus responds: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two.
Jesus does not invent these commandments—they come from Deuteronomy and Leviticus. But He does something revolutionary: He binds them inseparably. Love of God without love of neighbor is empty pietism; love of neighbor without love of God degenerates into mere sentiment. Together, they form the eternal law of love that fulfills every other precept.
"With all your heart, soul, and mind" means that love of God is not one compartment of life but its totality. Every faculty—affection, will, and intellect—is to be directed toward God. And from this total surrender flows genuine love of neighbor, which is not sentimentality but willing the good of the other at whatever cost. This is the law written on our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER
Lord my God, I love You above all things with my whole heart, soul, and mind. Teach me to love my neighbor as myself. May these two commandments be the foundation and summit of my entire life.
