Opinion: OpenAI and xAI are terrible orgs. And we have a right to be concerned.
tldr: These AI Corporations are not at all interested in making lives better for us rather they would throw us many times over under the bus for profits. Thus we need to act now to save ourselves and our loved ones.
To preface I’ll say that I’m a very pro tech and pro AI person in general. Claude has helped me immensely in the grunt parts of my work so I can focus more on the planning and strategy and a lot of it is just incredibly exciting however I’m afraid technology is only as good as the guy with the keys.
The line of investment and profits can only go so up and when everyone is neck to neck in terms of model accuracy the only ways to garner revenue is to… you guessed it, turn a blind eye to mass unemployment, deals with military corps, obsessive pornographic companions that worsen the isolation of certain people in society and possibly data collection.
Elon Musk’s xAI’s whole moat was nothing other being completely okay with “companions”, like seriously? Do we not have enough marginalized and troubled people already? Now we’re going to give them companions that they can rely on emotionally and then also sexually thus leaving no need to approach a woman ever? And then let the chatbots tell them how wrong their friends and family are to encourage them out of their comfort zone and instead they are right to isolate even more. What could go wrong? This a societal nuke waiting to go off. I’m not even going to talk about the underage issue.
And what happens when most of the population loses their jobs? It’s going to create so much struggle for so many people yet we have no say in any of this. And unfortunately, it’s gonna hit the lower paid, already struggling people most, the guys at call centres, the copywriters, the marketing girls.
I’m more optimistic with Anthropic although they are probably not a much better but their focus on enterprise value puts them above the need for adventures like engagement-needing user focused content
The effects of this change on our society and personal wellbeing will come very quickly and mercilessly. I suggest the first step we do is support Anthropic so we as people set an incentive for the industry to root for the people. Such that to get to profits, you must be moral or face the stick. Let us bump the ‘slightly’ better side!
Ditch Chatgpt/Gemini and switch to Claude NOW. It’s also much better. Thank you for reading.
