November 12, 2023… World Pneumonia Day.

More than 100 organizations representing children’s interests constitute the  Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia  which held the first World Pneumonia Day in 2009…

Pneumonia is a preventable and treatable disease that affects 155 million children younger than 5-years old and kills 1.6 million, annually. Pneumonia claims more lives in this age group than AIDS, malaria and measles combined. Despite this, news media rarely covers pneumonia. World Pneumonia Day aims to raise public awareness of this health crisis and encourages policy makers and grassroots organizers to combat the disease.

Affordable treatment and prevention options exist. A course of antibiotics, which costs less than USD $1 can cure the disease, if started early enough. The Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP) released by the WHO and UNICEF on World Pneumonia Day 2009, finds that 1 million children's lives could be saved every year, if prevention and treatment interventions were introduced widely in the world's poorest countries.
