I tried to have an abortion in Germany - here's my experience!
Hello! I moved to Bavaria just under half a year ago and shortly after, I found out I was pregnant, which was totally unintended. I immediately started researching how abortion works in Germany.
Fortunately, I wasn't alone in this situation and had the most supportive partner one could ever have. I contacted ProFamilia, which provided me with information about around 6 clinics. Two of them were very hard to reach due to their remote locations, so I had only 4 options left. My time was limited, and the process had to be done ASAP.
All the doctors showed a total lack of empathy, and I have no clue how they became doctors. Surprisingly, the female doctors were more impolite than the male doctors. I did not speak perfect German, but I definitely understood what I read and was told. I made sure I had all the papers in the right order before showing up to the appointments. At that time, I did not have a job and no health insurance in Germany. I was looking for a job and living off my own savings. I qualified to get financial aid, but this happened after the visit to the first doctor! Getting the proof of my financial situation was a huge headache (a certain insurance company refused multiple times without even looking at my bank statements and kept making baseless excuses - I read German law so think I know what I am saying).
\- One doctor (F) who only performed surgical abortions refused to proceed with me after I expressed uncertainty about whether I would proceed due to not knowing what the surgery consists of, its implications etc. She kicked me out of the office and redirected me to ProFamilia to make up my mind. When I called ProFamilia again, they gave me the answer any normal person would expect: they are not the doctors who would insert stuff into my own body, and it is out of their qualifications to advise me on which method I should use! I did read about it (definitely a good idea to seek medical advice on the internet!), but I was going to pay 600 euros, so at least I deserved to read some papers about the procedure and talk face to face to the doctor.
\- The second doctor (F) was in another city, 3-4 hours away by train. I left home at 3 in the morning for the meeting scheduled 2 weeks in advance. I had called one week before to explain the situation (no insurance, financial aid from the state) and to confirm ONCE AGAIN. I was the first patient that day. The receptionist checked the papers and instantly refused to proceed because of the lack of health insurance, even though ProFamilia and the health insurance where I got the aid from confirmed that all was set and good. The doctor excused herself by blaming the other receptionist that made the appointment for not knowing and asked for 1000 euros; otherwise, she wouldn't even look at me (the maximum cost is 600 euros, confirmed by ProFamilia), and she would only perform surgery (on the phone, it was confirmed that the pills would work just fine for how far I was in the pregnancy). I would like to quote the doctor because it's telling: "I am insured in Honolulu, so what?" and left to her office. Extremely impolite.
\- The other doctor (male) in a nearby city to the one mentioned before would have performed it too late for me, as I had to travel away anyway. At that point, I did not have hope to get the abortion done in Germany anymore.
\- A clinic in Berlin (all female) that is supposedly the pioneering clinic in telemedicine was so slow in replying and took two weeks to get to them. I set an appointment online after calling 5 times at different hours a day for a week. When I finally got an appointment with them, they did not show up online, neither tried to reach me in ANY way, so God knows what they were doing. Their app was dysfunctional and could not upload the documents. I decided to let it go; obviously, I don't trust those that are not able to keep their word.
I ended up paying a doctor (male) from a neighboring country, and everything went so smoothly! It did put a financial strain on me, and I am still trying to recover. It took a total of three weeks to get to a doctor for an emergency that would always have priority... I had such a nice welcome to Germany lol. Now I am finally ready to open up and answer any questions that you may have regarding this topic! I hope to be of help to others who will be in a similar situation.
