Rate My Reading Assignments
M/50/adjunct English professor here. I often teach an intro to literature course, and I wanted to get some input on the lineup I’ve selected for my students. The general outline of the course is that we write five essays per semester. For each one, I choose 2-3 short stories to read, all connected by some kind of common theme. My students may write about one, or all of them if they want to compare and contrast them.
My lineup is slightly different based on whether it’s spring or fall, but here they are:
1) Theme: Ethics (These are also connected by being stories from the 50s golden age of sci-fi)
”The Cold Equations” by Tom Godwin
”Answer” by Frederic Brown
”Usher II” by Ray Bradbury
2) In Spring, Theme: Love
”The Laughing Man“ by J. D. Salinger
”Wake for Susan” by Cormac McCarthy
”Fountains in the Rain” by Yukio Mishima
In Fall: Halloween Horror
”Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti
”55 Miles to the Gas Pump” by E. Annie Proulx
”The Signal-Man” by Charles Dickens
3) Theme: Lies
”The Man Who Would Be King” by Rudyard Kipling
”Why I Live at the P.O.” By Eudora Welty
4) Theme: Freedom
”Bartleby, the Scrivener” by Herman Mellville
“The Goophered Grapevine” by Charles Chestnutt
5) In Spring, Theme: The Western
”The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain
”The Blood Bay” by E. Annie Proulx
In Fall: War
Excerpts from “The Unwomanly Face of War” by Svetlana Alexeivich
Excerpts from “Vietnam Journal” by Don Lomax
”A Perfect Day for Bananafish” by J. D. Salinger
