I feel like I’ve lost all mobility in society What I mean…

I feel like I’ve lost all mobility in society

What I mean by that is I can’t find a better job, my income is fine, not amazing but stable. But at baseline, i make barely enough to break even. I can barely afford to make up for a mistake, if I make an impulse buy, if I eat sick, if I goof up and get a late fee. It hurts and it hurts a lot longer than it should.

I want to change industries, I work in legal, and it’s “fine” but its not what i want and I don’t want to progress to paralegal, I am valued where I am at, and that is nice for security, but I sit there and no idea where to apply, what to apply to, and regardless of what I apply to, big ol nope. The job i currently have, I only got because my friend had a mental breakdown and quit but said they should hire me. We applied at the same time. Last job was a toxic situation and it got me fired, they quit in protest and several others quit too. I could not get a job for a month, but they all helped me get one. And now it feels like it’s time to move on, and I can’t.

And that is what is so frustrating. My boss won’t give me a raise, despite it being two years already and despite constant praise, despite performance bonuses on the rare occasion those are given out (and theyre almost nothing). Applications are coming back with nothing or coming back with instant rejections. I’m about to pay off my car, which should be a huge boost in affordability, but nope. Student loans will kick in by then.

I feel very lucky to be where I am at, but where I am at feels like a tar pit. My one thing that might make the job a little better, my manager said that the boss might be able to be convinced to let me work remote. I have not pushed the issue much, but I really want to but idk how to justify it. Closest casual way I can envision, I’m in a long distance relationship with someone an hour away in Austin, and I kinda wanted to move to Austin anyway.

I’ve seen that companies are not hiring right now, and using AI as the excuse. I think I’m just griping because everyone in my life is making a lot of money, or married to someone making a lot of money, because they are highly specialized nurses, first responders, in management roles, and apparently they have never even heard of AI causing layoffs or I’m just making excuses.

Of my friends, the only one who has been able to find a job or get promoted basically schmoozed with former employers they kept in touch with and were able to secure a better position. But they did it because they literally could not find a better opportunity otherwise.

I’ve tried to connect with people I know in other industries and I get a vibe like “please don’t ask me to hire you”
