Sci-Fi as a means, not an end

Growing up I really loved Fantasy, and a fair bit of Sci-Fi too. It's flashy, it's escapist, it's fun - what's not to enjoy?

However, as I got more into classic literature, novels, and other genres, I felt that Sci-Fi was actually quite limited and surface level, reliant upon tropes and awe of the unknown over development and ideas.

Having recently read "The Dispossed' by Ursula Guinn, as well as other modern classic Sci-Fi like "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and "The Man Who Fell to Earth," I have realised how wrong I was. These books use Sci-Fi in its full potential - as a way of pulling out exciting and challenging ideas about society and the universe and examining them through a whole set of of new lenses. It really is a medium, not an ends.
