Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's economic adviser, Lars-Hendrik Röller, believes that Germany's collaboration with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure gas supplies was justified. Röller argues that the decision was based on societal consensus, and if not for current knowledge, the country would have acted differently. Although Merkel was considered the Western leader who knew Putin best, her policies have been criticized for being too soft on Putin.
