The city is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Embankments and beaches stretch along the edge of Aktau. The city is provided with drinking water by the MAEK water desalination station, where the distillate produced from seawater is prepared and mixed with slightly mineralized artesian water from the Kuylus deposit, since there are no natural sources of drinking water near the city.
