What's the latest breakthrough you've had in your photography?

Asking because for me, it's... **setting in-camera white balance to 5500 rather than Auto**.

I've been shooting for 6+ years (hobbyist) and had always left white balance on Auto. That's the prevailing advice everywhere and it's just one of those things I never questioned, as it is changed easily enough in post. As a result, WB was often all over the place in my pics, but was fine, one more creative decision to make in editing - and a fundamental one!

After watching a recent Sean Tucker video where he explains that he sets his WB to 5500-5600 (daylight), I tried it on a whim and... it's a revelation.

The mood of my shoots is exactly as what I see with my eyes. I can off course change that in post, but finally, the pics default to what I see.

For me, it's a game changer and a way that's difficult to explain: for the first time, I can shoot with confidence knowing that I will get what I see, by default. I didn't realize how much having WB change at the whim of the camera was affecting my approach to photography. Until recently, because WB was so often quite different from the scene, contributed to the notion that what I capture is just a "rough draft" of the final photo, instead of the actual photo.

But as I grow to minimize editing and get it right in camera (rather than capturing with in ways that facilitate editing), I feel like a fixed WB is a huge step forward. My camera feels more like a camera rather than an electronic device that records pixels for editing.

It's one hell of a breakthrough to be having after 6 years but now I'm curious what I else I will "discover" some day.

So what did YOU recently discover or figure out?
