Pangilinan Calls for Long-Term, Nationwide Flood Management Plan

Pangilinan Calls for Long-Term, Nationwide Flood Management Plan

Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said flooding should not be treated as a normal occurrence in the Philippines, calling for a long-term and nationwide flood management plan to address recurring floods that affect communities during heavy rains.

Pangilinan said Filipinos should not have to fear or worry whenever it rains, pointing to recurring scenes of flooded roads, homes and schools being inundated, and families being forced to evacuate.

He stressed the need for a coordinated flood management strategy in which government projects and plans are interconnected. According to Pangilinan, spending billions of pesos on flood control will not be enough if projects are implemented without an integrated national plan.

The senator also called for greater transparency in the use of public funds allocated for flood control. He said every Filipino has the right to know where funds are spent, what projects were implemented, and what results they produced.

Pangilinan questioned the effectiveness of flood control projects that exist on paper but fail to prevent communities from flooding during heavy rains.

He said the government must ensure that flood control spending translates into effective projects that protect homes, roads, schools, and communities from recurring flooding.
