In January 1942, General Douglas MacArthur made his first and only visit to the men fighting on Bataan following the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The majority of the soldiers on Bataan would begin to starve and fall sick on top of defending themselves from unrelenting enemy attacks as a result of little to no supplies on the peninsula. Many blamed MacArthur for their situation and resented his apparent safety in the tunnels of Corregidor, which provided relative cover from the constant Japanese aerial attacks as well as food and medical supplies. The suffering soldiers began to call him “Dugout Doug.”
