NHS England has started offering free at-home HPV self-sampling kits to eligible women aged 30–65 who are overdue for cervical screening. 🩺
Recipients can take a vaginal swab at home and return it by post for testing for high-risk HPV. The scheme is intended for under-screened people and is an addition to, rather than a replacement for, clinician-led screening.
A positive home result does not diagnose cancer and requires a clinician-taken follow-up test to check for cervical-cell changes. 📬 The policy aims to help reach the roughly one-third of invited people who do not attend screening.
The rollout supports NHS England’s objective of eliminating cervical cancer by 2040. Its effect will depend on whether people return the kits and complete follow-up care when it is needed.
