I started photography in 2021 simply because I thought it looked interesting and I had a lot of fun taking pictures of random things. Looking back at those early photos now, they were actually pretty good.
Now, about five years later, I feel a bit stuck.
I still enjoy photography. I enjoy carrying my camera around and taking random pics. I even enjoy the gear side of the hobby a little too much sometimes. But when I actually go out for a photo walk, I often do not know what to photograph. Sometimes I ask my gf if she wants a shooting but then I do not know how I could let her pose lol.
It's a strange feeling because I like taking photos, but I don't feel like I have anything worth photographing around me / or maybe I should say, I don't have an good eye/sense for good situations.
I'm 26, so I'm still relatively young, but I constantly compare myself to 18-year-old photographers on Instagram with incredible editing skills, amazing locations, expensive gear, and photos with 100k likes. Meanwhile my post-processing skills are pretty basic, and I often feel like I don't find interesting things.
It's frustrating because I genuinely love this hobby and want to improve, but lately I pick up my camera, go for a walk, and come home without taking anything because nothing inspires me.
Have any of you experienced something similar?
What helped you get out of it?
Would it make sense to recreate or imitate photos I admire, not to publish them as my own, but as an exercise to understand composition, editing, and style? Do you use mood boards, photography challenges, or other methods to find inspiration again?
I'd really appreciate your advice because right now I'm feeling a bit lost with a hobby that I still genuinely enjoy. #hobby source
