Quantum Computing Could Break Crypto Sooner Than We Think.
I’ve been going down the rabbit hole on quantum computing lately, and honestly, I think most people in crypto are underestimating what’s coming.
Right now, basically every major blockchain relies on classical cryptography like ECDSA. It’s been battle-tested for years, but it was never designed to withstand quantum attacks.
The real issue is if large-scale quantum computers become viable, algorithms like Shor’s could theoretically break private keys derived from public keys. That means wallets that have exposed public keys could be vulnerable, funds could be stolen without needing seeds or passwords, and the entire security assumption of current chains gets shaken.
Now, before anyone says this is decades away, that’s the part I’m not fully convinced about. Governments and institutions have already been preparing. NIST released post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024. Big tech and defense sectors are actively working on quantum-resistant systems. There’s already talk of harvest now, decrypt later attacks.
So even if quantum isn’t here today, data, and possibly keys exposed now, could be compromised in the future.
The interesting part is that some projects are already exploring post-quantum cryptography. Others will likely need massive upgrades or migrations. Bitcoin itself would require consensus-level changes, and let’s be real, coordination at that scale won’t be easy.
So I’m curious what everyone here thinks. Is the quantum threat overhyped or underestimated? Which chains are actually taking this seriously? Do you think Bitcoin can realistically adapt in time?
Feels like one of those risks that’s either nothing… or everything. #cryptocurrency
