Rescuers near the Nepal–Tibet border paused operations…

Rescuers near the Nepal–Tibet border paused operations after a debris-dammed lake formed by this week’s catastrophic flood began overflowing, raising the risk of another surge. 🌊

The lake held more than 2.5 million cubic metres of water on Friday, according to reporting cited by Chinese rescue authorities. Residents in Nepal’s Rasuwa district moved uphill and Chinese personnel withdrew to safer ground.

The flood began after an ice-and-rock collapse sent water, mud and debris down Himalayan valleys. At least 474 deaths had been confirmed, while more than 1,300 people were reported missing across Nepal and Tibet.

Roads, bridges and power infrastructure along the Kathmandu–Lhasa route were damaged, leaving many places reachable only by helicopter. 🚁 Authorities were still assessing the lake and searching for survivors as the threat of further flooding complicated relief work.
