On the remains of a once towering Douglas Fir tree, new life is attempting to replace the former one. As I wandered through the woods, I followed the tell-tale tracks of the four-footed, forester who planted this tree. Every once in a while, and despite my attempts at stealth, the rapid chattering overhead revealed that I had been found out! These Red Tree Squirrels are the sentinels of the forest! To find food, they will climb to the top of the trees and nibble the cones off the end of the branches. The cones fall where they will, most of which are picked up by the busy little rodents. Some are immediately taken to a prominent log or tree stump, where the seeds are methodically removed from behind the scales and consumed. Other cones are buried in the duff, to be dug up and consumed later. The former way is most likely how this tree and the even tinier one behind it got their start. In fact, if you look down low in the front, you can see a seed that fell and has not yet been discovered. If it remains in place until Spring, it could very well sprout into a tiny little seedling. I found many young trees, both in the duff and on stumps as I sauntered along. It’s good to see nature, well, doin’ what comes naturally! #nature source
