Two types of van life strategies/philosophies: stealth and full off grid
So I have noticed there are two types of van life strategies/philosophies.
There's the full off grid van that you build out with as many amenities as possible, roof fans, solar, bikes on the back, communications dishes, some have kitchens and showers.
These off grid vans are great for off the grid life and if you have the means you can literally stay in BLM land forever.
Off the grid vans suffer as far as stealth goes though and limits your spots in urban areas and if you want to maximize working/job opportunities you may need the second type of van: The stealth van.
The stealth van, a minivan or SUV or car with a trunk, where you have the bare bones amenities but you're able to park basically anywhere and be invisible and you engineer the van around invisibility.
I respect both of these strategies greatly but I find it hard to bridge the gap between the two.
The minute you put a solar panel and a maxxair fan on you're no longer stealth. Also, a big Ford Transit or skoolie stands out in suburban neighborhoods even without those amenities.
I have both a stealth Rav4 (I had to buy when I had a job commute) and a built out Ford Econoline.
I just started using the Rav4 in an urban area and it's WAY easier to van life than my big Ford Econoline with solar panels and maxxair fans.
I'm very interested in people who have bridged these gaps somehow and how they did it.
