Does anyone else think that Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights is kind of a villian in his own right?
Re-reading Wuthering Heights rn and it dawned on me how cruel Edgar is to Isabella by disowning her when she is clearly just very young and naive and didn’t run away with Heathcliff out of some malicious desire to hurt him or Cathy.
People always talk about Edgar like he’s a source of moral purity in the novel and I think it’s a pretty reductive and shallow reading of his character. While he’s certainly not as monstrous as Heathcliff, you’ve gotta be a bit of a monster to go full no contact on your baby sister after she marries a dangerous man bc she hurt your pride right? People also tend to gloss over the moment when they’re all kids and Edgar insults Heathcliff’s hair in this very dehumanizing and borderline racist tone, and Heathcliff throws apple sauce at him.
Nelly excuses Edgar‘s insult by saying he didn’t mean anything by it, but given that she’s somewhat of an unreliable narrator and clearly thinks of him very fondly, I kind of doubt her interpretation. I think Edgar Linton is kind of a villain in his own subdued and passive way. And I think he played a role in making Heathcliff into the monster he became. #entertainment
