Forensic investigators at Citizen Lab said they confirmed…

Forensic investigators at Citizen Lab said they confirmed that an unnamed Serbian student-protest activist’s iPhone was infected with Pegasus spyware through an iMessage zero-click exploit. 📱 The finding means the phone could have been compromised remotely without the user opening a message or taking other action.

Citizen Lab said it found high-confidence indicators of infection from December 2025 to January 2026. Pegasus can give an operator access to private data, including encrypted messages, and allow covert use of the microphone and camera.

The case is part of what SHARE Foundation called Serbia’s largest documented wave of advanced-spyware targeting: at least 14 people connected to the student movement, civil society and opposition politics received Apple threat notifications or had infections identified. 🔍 Separate forensic work also found newer NoviSpy infections on Android devices.

The technical findings do not identify who operated Pegasus. The Guardian reported that there is no evidence attributing the Pegasus attack to Aleksandar Vučić’s government; parliamentary speaker Ana Brnabić denied that students had been spied on. Citizen Lab said the iMessage exploit involved had been patched in iOS 18.4.1.
