ATM withdrawal commission for mastercard circuits

Hi,

I've just moved to Germany for my PhD exchange, and I was suprised by how little my Italian mastercard debit card is accepted. Having to use cash, I was wondering if anyone knows if the German ATM applies any surcharge for the withrdawal past the usual commission from my bank. I'm surrounded by small Volksbank branches. Or if there are any tips you can give on how to navigate the German payment system...
