Murakami
In the context of this writer, I more often encounter negative opinions than positive ones. Could you explain to me why there is such antipathy toward this author among many people? I myself have only read a few books so far — the trilogy 1Q84 and A Wild Sheep Chase.
From the opinions I’ve come across, I’ve distinguished the following critical voices:
* **wordiness** — here I’m able to understand some people’s grumbling, but personally I really like the long descriptions of everyday activities, interwoven with lengthy philosophical and social reflections. For a long time now I’ve believed that plot is a less important element than character creation or the very style of storytelling, which is why I enjoy this way of writing so much. At the same time, I don’t think that plot exists in Murakami’s books merely out of necessity. Also, because of a strong melancholy, maybe even depression, I like listening for hours about people whose actions are described in detail and in an unhurried way.
* **mixing realism with fantasy** — I love this motif. Mysticism, oneirism — combined with the melancholy of the characters, it works phenomenally. I myself don’t like realism, in fact I hate it, and here it works perfectly with the characters’ inner struggles, and the world in Murakami’s books feels magical.
* **repetitiveness** — here it’s hard for me to judge, I’ve only read four books so far.
* **sexual themes** — I feel that criticism of this area of Murakami’s writing comes mainly from Generation Z (which, unfortunately, I belong to). Personally, I’m not a fan of these scenes, but it cannot be denied that in a normal society, among normal people, this topic is… normal. Generation Z is experiencing a crisis of friendships and romantic relationships (of which I am a phenomenal example xD) and avoids these topics in pop culture, but when you think about it, it seems to me that this is not a very healthy approach.
* **the portrayal of women** — here it is completely difficult for me to speak. I haven’t noticed either sexism or putting female characters in the background. In the books I’ve read, female characters seemed to be presented normally. But here I would gladly listen to opinions precisely from women.
