On November 27, 1975, Ross McWhirter, co-founder of the Guinness Book of Records, was assassinated outside his home by Harry Duggan and Hugh Doherty, affiliated with the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). This act followed McWhirter's offer of a £50,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of IRA bombers.
