Starting to feel a bit desperate and defeated here. I've been shooting seriously for about 5 or 6 years (minus 1 cause I really didn't do anything in 2020). I see people on here describing charging thousands of dollars and having long lists of clients, and I lately it just feels like there's no clear or possible path for me to get there.
Most of my paid work is for local concerts/bands. I'll usually make around $100-300 per gig, with about 2-3 gigs per month. Obviously that's not enough to pay the bills, so I need to work a full time job to live. My day job is doing audio/visual work for conferences and conventions, where I see photographers all the time and can't help but feel overwhelmingly jealous of them. I've considered getting into event photography, but I have no idea how, and absolutely cannot afford to drop $2k on a 70-200 that they all seem to have.
So I start to look at other work, like product, food or lifestyle photography, but all clients seem to want years of experience and tight portfolios, so I just really don't know where to begin there. I'd love to spend time honing my skills and building that portfolio, but working 40+ hours a week just to survive sucks all the creative energy from me.
People tell me my photos are good. I know I have good people skills cause I've been working customer facing day jobs for years. I want to take photos for a living, but right now I'm so incredibly lost that it just feels like an unobtainable dream.
Has or does anyone else ever feel this way? I'm honestly not sure if I'm looking for advice or just straight up need to vent here. #hobby source
