Throwback to when in a 2016(!) interview with Spiegel Online , HAYAO MIYAZAKI , the renowned animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli , expressed his strong disapproval of employing artificial intelligence (AI) in art and animation. He characterised the utilisation of AI-generated artwork as “an insult to life itself” , emphasising his stance against it.
In the interview (you can check it here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngZ0K3lWKRc ), a group of designers and animators showcase their AI creation to Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki. The AI-generated animation depicts a grotesque, fleshy monster reminiscent of creatures from horror video games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill , dragging itself along the ground. The presenter, displaying a sense of desperation, comments on the creature’s movements, likening them to dancing and noting its unsettling resemblance to a zombie.
Despite the presenter’s enthusiasm, Miyazaki’s reaction is far from impressed, bordering on disgust. He takes a moment to collect his thoughts before launching into a scathing critique of the AI creators.
“Well… Every morning, not in recent days, I see my friend who has a disability. It’s so hard for him just to do a high five; his arm with stiff muscles can’t reach out to my hand. Now, thinking of him, I can’t watch this stuff and find it interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is.”
“I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it, but I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

I adore Ghibli movies. It's not just the beautiful drawings, but the stories, the emotions... Totoro, Ponyo, Spirited Away... OMG MASTER PIECES!! Thank you for the tip!
